Websites of the Past
Traditionally, websites were just ' basic electronic brochures ' that were not interactive at all and allowed users to do little more than just look at a picture, read static text or retrieve basic information.
Viewed as basic, cheap, difficult to use ( expensive to update ) and designed to sit on the Internet indefinitely ... not really doing anything and then thrown away and replaced in a year or two.
Business owners saw these types of websites as a necessary evil and did not place very much value on them at all and ultimately they provided little real value to the business owner.
The term "Web 2.0" was originally coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci who said :
" The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially static screenfulls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first glimmerings of Web 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just starting to see how that embryo might develop. The Web will be understood not as screenfulls of text and graphics but as a transport mechanism, the ether through which interactivity happens ".
The term Web 2.0 did not resurface at all again until 2003.
In 2004, the term began its rise in popularity when O'Reilly Media and MediaLive hosted the first Web 2.0 conference. Focusing on flexible, interactive, expansive websites and associated new technologies.
It was another 3 years before websites started to truly embrace the powerful principles of web 2.0.
Web 2.0 websites allow users to do more than just look at picture, read static text or retrieve basic information. By building upon the framework of what was already possible in "Web 1.0", web 2.0 provides the user with a rich interactive and valued experience, that enables the user to participate and contribute to the content of the website. Therefore the growth of the content of the website can become a truly powerful collaborative work.
This has been called "Network as platform" computing, where users can provide the data that is on a Web 2.0 site and exercise some control over that data. These web 2.0 style websites have an "Architecture of participation" that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it.
The multitude of client-side/web browser technologies used in Web 2.0 development are vast but some of the more established technologies are Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax), Adobe Flash and the Adobe Flex framework, andJavaScript/Ajax frameworks such as Yahoo! UI Library, Dojo Toolkit, MooTools, and jQuery. Ajax programming uses JavaScript to upload and download new data from the web server without undergoing a full page reload.
Although we are already starting to see the emergence of web 3.0, it is the powerful, interactive and flexible attributes of web 2.0 that have changed the world wide web from a ' valueless & static ' website culture into a dynamic, rewarding and interactive experience for every user and visitor to websites in the world today.
